LEM 511 Module Eight Assignment
School libraries have to address the needs
of diverse students. Diversity means different characteristics and experience
that defines individuals (http://www.ala.org/acrl.org/content/73/9/547.full).
This includes ethnic and racial
background, cognitive and physicals abilities, and socioeconomic status.
However, diversity in libraries means library media specialist have to provide
appropriate resources for students of different ethnicities, races and
cultures. As a library media specialist, I must address and recognize the
information needs of diverse students.
As being a reflective practitioner, I
reflect back on all my educational professions. As a library media specialist I
have to use best approaches in assisting diverse students’ information needs.
Some approaches include the following: information skills, communication
skills, and research skills. As a library media specialist, I have collections
of books, magazines, and software for diverse students in the library. As a
library media specialist, I have to include all diverse students in library
instruction. In addition, I have to teach students how to research information
on the Internet. I have to teach diverse students how to access websites that
assist them in researching particular topics. For example, if a Chinese student
ask me a question about where to locate information about shadow puppets. I
have to provide them with online resources that discuss about Chinese puppets.
As a library media specialist, I have to provide teachers with resources to
assist diverse students in the classroom. To continue, as a library media
specialist I have to able to communicate with diverse students who speak a
different language. As a library media specialist, I have to educate myself on
how to effectively communicate with students who speak a different language. I
will definitely review information about how to communicate and understand
students who speak a different language. In addition, I will attend workshops
and programs that discuss how to communicate and understand students who speak
a different language. I want to also assist teachers on how to communicate and
understand these particular students. To continue, I want to teach diverse
students how to do research. I want to show them how to type any topics that
want to in the homepage browser. This will help them locate information on the
Internet. On the other hand, as library media specialist I will provide
resources for students will disabilities. I will have different software that
meets the needs of the different disabilities. In addition, I will purchase
large print books for students that are visual impaired. I will have touch
screen device for students who are deaf. As a library media specialist, I will
also assist teachers with resources in teaching these particular groups.
Furthermore, I will teach diverse students library skills so they can
effectively use the library.
All in all, as library media specialist, I
will assist all students. However, I have assist students differently because
students are not the same when it comes to learning information. As a library
media specialist, I will have all kinds of books for students to check-in and
check-out to read. I will have all kinds of magazines for students to read in
the library. However, I want will not allow the students to check-in and
check-out the magazines. As a library media specialist, I will have all kind of
resource books for teachers to assist them in teaching diverse students. I will
provide library services on the school library homepage. I will place online
dictionaries, online encyclopedias, online books, online educational videos,
and online magazines for diverse students to read and do any type of research.
Furthermore, I will provide teachers with information about where they can find
lesson plans to use in teaching students the school curriculum.

Reflective
Practitioner
Being a reflective practitioner is an
important component for all education professions, because it focuses on growth
and responsibility. As a library media specialist, I have to use best practices
in working in library. Some best practices include the following: communication
skills, resources, information literacy, and knowledge about teaching library
skills. In addition, as a library media specialist, I have to know how to
communicate effectively with teachers, students and parents. I need good communication skills, because part
of being a reflective practitioner requires have good collaboration with
teachers, students and parents. To
continue, reflecting on best practices such as up-to-date resources will help
me to better assist teachers with the necessary resources for instruction. For
example, teachers and students should be able to come to me to receive information
about books, materials, hardware and programs use. As a library media specialist, I have to reflect
on literacy and technology skills in which I am knowledgeable, and then share
and teach this information to students and teachers. Also, reflecting on my library media best practices
will help me to assist students how in finding research information from print,
electronic internet resources and visual media.
To continue, as a reflective practitioner, I learned ideas, management
skills, procedures, responsibilities and duties of media specialists during a library
field experiences I did. In other words,
from this field experience, I learned a wealth of knowledge and skills such as
cataloging and Dewey System that will be useful for me in becoming a librarian
media specialist in the future.
Therefore, being reflective practitioner will
help assist me in assessing my own best practices, and making necessary
adjustments to become a better librarian.
A
Changed Agent
Yes, I am and must definitely be a changed agent. Schools, children, and society have changed
as the world move toward the 21st century. As a librarian media specialist, I have to
play an important role to become better prepared through knowledge of
technology and literacy skills, so I can inform teachers and students how to
meet these challenges of the 21st century. In other words, I have to be a changed agent
in the information world, since students
today are so tuned and involved in computers and many technology gadgets.
To continue, as a changed agent, I think of the Old
Librarians versus the new librarians. For example, Scheeren
(2010) discussed the changes of the librarians working in libraries across the
United States. During the 1960’s, the
library resources that were used consisted of film, filmstrips, projectors,
records and record players. To continue,
card catalogs were used to locate books and/or novels. On the other hand,
today, much emphasis is now on advance resources, such as e-books, audio books,
animated books, interactive books, digital cameras, and new and innovative
software programs, web pages, etc.
In 1998, the mission of the school
media library program was to provide access to materials in the library,
instruction to stimulate interest in reading, using and viewing ideas and
information and working with other educators to create learning strategies to
meet needs of individual students (Woolls, 1998?). These goals continue to be a focal point of
the importance of librarian media specialists’ standards and best
practices.
Therefore, it is important that I am a
changed agent, so I can help others to improve in their own lives to become
better researchers and readers.
Life
Long Learner
Just as any professional, it is vital that I continue to be a lifelong
learner, so that I can progress growth and become more knowledgeable in all
phases of life. Since society has
changed so much, I have to develop better leadership qualities and become more
apt to become a leader in all phases of my life. From the point of view of a
librarian media specialist, I have to be more susceptible for change and to be
more willing to move forward to keep up with new advancements in technology and
librarian standards of best practices.
To continue, I will attend conference
and events on library leadership. I want to know more strategies on how to
operate the library effectively. I will attend professional development
(conferences and workshops) related to library issues. I will take more classes
on using technology. I want to continue to learn about technology resources
that I can teach and students. I want teachers to know about technology
resources that can assist them with teaching lesson. As a library media
specialist, my job is to teach teachers how to integrate technology into the
curriculum, use new hardware and software. In addition, I will join
professional organizations that are for library media specialists. I want to
know about library services available, grants and great websites for students
to use in the library. I want to network and collaborate with other library media
specialists. It is good to know what other library media specialists are doing
in the libraries. This will provide me with ideas and changes I need to make in
the library.
All in
all, as a library media specialist I will continue to grow and improve in
technology. I will take more classes in technology. I will teach students about how to use
technology in their everyday life. In addition, I will share technology skills
with teachers. Teachers can use the skills that I share with them in teaching
their lessons. Some technologies I will use in the library include the
following: E-books, laptops and Noble Nook. Furthermore, I will share and
exchange ideas with other librarians by posting blogs, wiki and Google pages on
the Internet.

In a documented paper, compare and
contrast librarian created online materials with those available on the
Internet. What is the ideal combination of those materials discussed earlier in
the book and school librarian-created online materials?
The library I research on the Internet was
the Library of Congress. There are many types of specialist that contribute
information on this particular site. However, the digital reference specialist
is the person that provides online resources for users. Some the online resources
that the digital reference specialist provide include the following: blogs,
post, poems, audio and video etc. The librarian created online materials are
similar to the Library of Congress. The librarian created online materials
provide classroom resources, list of periodicals, reference links and search
engine links. Both libraries provide helpful and resourceful information in
assisting others to find what they need in doing research. In addition, both
libraries are well organized so that people can easily search for information.
In contrast, the librarian created online materials provide library policy,
schedule and mission. The Library Congress provides separate contact
information of the entire specialist involved in provided different information
on this particular website. The following website I use is http://www.loc.gov/rr/program/bib/trethewey/
to obtain information in comparing and contrasting librarian created online
materials with those that were available on the Internet.
Both libraries have many things in common.
In addition, both libraries could provide each other with online resources that
they do not share. Both libraries would have the same online resources for
students and teachers to use. Both libraries would provide a wealth of
information for students and teachers if they share online resources.
Furthermore, students and teachers enjoy libraries that provide them with many
resources for doing research.

Analyze the arguments for and against
the use of computer teachers and computer classes instead of the integration of
technology into the curriculum.
Computer teachers and computer classes
should have a place in schools. Computer teachers can teach students how to
effectively use the computer. Computer teachers have a certification in
computer science. They have taken away classes that consist of technology.
Therefore, computer teachers can provide students with technological resources
that assist them in learning particular concept. For example, if computer
teachers do a lesson on erosion, he or she can have students to use the
Internet for finding about erosion. However, regular teachers might do
something different. Teachers might use a picture from the Internet to show
students about erosion. Furthermore, it is a best to have computer teachers and
computer classes in schools.
Computer teachers and computer classes
should not have a place in schools. Teachers should integrate technology into
the curriculum. They can teach their lessons on PowerPoint. In addition,
teachers can show students educational videos from the Internet. Teachers can
teach with technology. Therefore, computer teachers and computer classes are
not needed in schools. School should only allow teachers to integrate
technology into the curriculum.
Summary
Chapter 11 was about
integrating technology into the curriculum. The author suggests that school
need computer teachers and computer classes for teaching technology. Computer
teachers teach elementary students about keyboarding and how to use different
educational software. In addition, computer teachers teach secondary students how
to use advance educational software. The author also provided reasons to use
technology in the curriculum. Students are motivated when technology is
integrated into the curriculum. Integrating technology into the curriculum
means that it provides new approaches in instruction. Integrating technology
into the curriculum helps make teachers more productive. However, there is a
major con in integrating technology into the curriculum. Technology constant
changes therefore schools would have to purchase new operating systems often at
high expense. Furthermore, computer teachers are best suited for teaching
students how to use technology because they have a certification in computer
science.

sites, they can start using it to share information with others. However,
people want to make sure that they share valuable information on blog and wiki
for others to read. Some information that they can share including the
following: assignments, discussion questions and videos. So far on my blog and
wiki site there are other people writing comments other things. However, there
is nothing mention about what I post on blog and wiki regarding assignments,

Questions
1 and 2 page 213
1. Considering the
various roles of a school librarian, try to predict ways in which technology
will enhance your responsibilities as a professional. Consider how you will
interact with your peers, students, parents, and the community in which you
work. Prepare a report of your findings for your class.
Library media specialist must have a
teaching degree including a librarian certification. There are many facets to
library media specialist job. Library media specialist collaborates with
teaching providing them with resources to assist them in teaching students. In
addition, library media specialist works with students teaching them library
skills, research skills and library procedures. However, the library media
specialist main job is to teach information literacy, school curriculum and
library standards. Furthermore, library media specialists are to promote
reading and reading skills for students.
As a library media specialist, technology
will be used in the library. There will be a library orientation for students,
teachers, parents and the community to read online. The library orientation
will include library hours, contact information, accessible links to
educational sites, online access public catalog, library procedures including
other information. There will be information and resources post on blog, wiki
and web pages for teachers to read. These will give teachers an opportunity to
comment on the information that was posted. Furthermore, technology will definitely
enhance my responsibilities as a library media specialist.
2. As
a prospective school librarian, what are your present strengths and weaknesses
in technology? How do you plan to address these weaknesses? Technology evolves
over time, providing users with newer and more creative tools. What are you
plans to stay current? How will you continue your professional growth?
I have personal strengths and weaknesses
when it comes to technology. My personal strengths are the ability to operate
the computer and use different applications. I know how to turn the computer on
and off. In addition, I know how to log on the computer successfully. The
different applications I know how to use are Microsoft Office and PowerPoint. However
my weakness is how to use Excel application effectively. I plan to purchase the
Excel application and practice on it daily. I want to know how to use Excel so
I can create budget and other spreadsheets. In addition, I will seek help from
someone who managed in business. I want to obtain help in making different
spreadsheets using Excel. I believe this will definitely help me to be very
good in using Excel to make spreadsheets. In addition, I plan to stay current
in knowing about technology by taking computer classes. I will take computer
classes and learn about new programs and software that continue to come about
in the world. On the other hand, I will attend different conferences and events
to continue to grow professional. I will join professional organizations that
involves learning strategies and concepts for working in the library.
Summary
Chapter 13 was about
how technology is changing beyond and in the future. The change that might
occur in the future with technology is a move toward interactive instruction.
This will allow teachers and librarians to integrate technology in the
curriculum. In addition, personal response systems are coming to all college
level of instructions. Personal response system is hand held clickers that
allows the instructor to monitor entire classroom of computers. However, there
are many improvements need to be made in technology for students’ with
disabilities. There are hardware and software
available for students’ with disabilities but they need more resources. On the
other hand, as people know technology is advancing every day. There are many mobile devices people can
purchase now. People can install GPS system in their automobiles. This system
enables search engines to locate people who are stranded. People do a lot of
social networking. They barely meet up now a library or restaurant to discuss
any type of matter. In addition, people have any opportunity now to down load
books to read. People down load books to read from e-books such Kindle. People
can purchase televisions that provide streaming media. This allows people to
watch videos. Furthermore, people hardly purchase DVDS now because of the new
technology that keeps coming out every day.
