1. You
have noticed that both teachers and students in your school are either unaware
of or ignore of copyright law. After some discussion with the school
administration they have charge you with developing a copyright policy for your
school. Your assignment is to prepare a copyright policy that can be adopted by
your school board.
Copyright
Policy for Library Media Center
Objective: The materials and resources could be used
if checked out for own purpose of use only if you agree to abide by the
copyright laws that I have provided for Library Media Center.
Provided are examples of fair use in using materials
and resources from the library media center for teachers and students:
1. Use
Copyright Materials for Reading Lessons
Teachers
use websites, video games, movies and television news to enhance students’
communication skills. Under the fair use, teachers can use this technique for
the purpose of showing illustrations from these copyright sources and make it
available to class and colleagues. In addition, teachers must stay within the
limitations of using one clip or excerpt from these sources. Teachers can use the
whole picture or information, but need to credit the author by providing a
citation of the form and content of it use. The digital format of the copyright
sources needs to provide protection of these sources against third parties
access and downloads.
2. Use
Copyright Materials for Curriculum Lessons
Teachers
use copyright materials for creating lessons plans and other school related
matters for the purpose of using technology or media literacy. In addition,
teachers copy examples from the copyright materials using it for assignments or
teaching. Under the fair use, teachers can integrate copyright materials in
teaching and using for doing lessons. However, teachers should give credit of
authors work by correctly citing the work or works.
3. Sharing
Media Literacy Materials
Educators
using copyright materials in a meeting or conference need to make sure sound
judgment in using these them. In addition, educators who decide to share
copyright materials with others must have a binding agreement in writing that
if lost, damaged or stolen would take full responsibility of paying the cost of
the materials. Under the fair use, educators who developed materials can allow
others to purchase because fair use applies to commercial materials and outside
materials that is not in marketplace model. However, educators are not cover
under the fair use if they use third party copyright image or text for
promoting their own materials and promotional purposes. They should obtain
permission when deciding to do this kind of task.
4. Students
use copyright materials for academic work
Students
create a blog, wiki or Goggle web page with copyright music for the background
sound. In addition, students used copyright pictures or illustrations to put
into their own creative work. Under the fair use, educators are free to allow
students to use copyright materials in their work. Students limitation is the
using copyright materials should not hinder own creativity. Students must give
credit to authors work by correctly citing the work or works. Furthermore,
students must not share copyright materials with others. The following website
that assisted me in writing this information was http: http://www.centerforsocialmedia.org/fair-use/related-materials/codes/code-best-practices-fair-use-media-literacy-education
Note:
In some cases you need to get permission for copyright owners to use their
materials.

2. There
are many differing opinions concerning the efficacy of Internet filtering
software. Prepare a position paper that could be presented to your school
administration enumerating the positive and negative points of such software
and describe each. Arrive at a conclusion that supports your conclusion.
There are many differing opinions
concerning the efficiency of Internet filtering software. Prepare a position
paper that could be presented to your school administration enumerating the
positive and negative points of such software and describe each. Arrive at a
conclusion that supports your conclusion. There are many Internet filtering
software for parents, teachers, and administrators could purchase for homes and
schools. Internet filtering software is use to block and restrict unwanted
websites. The purpose of software is to prevent students from going on explicit
websites. Some Internet filtering software that teachers and administrators
could purchase for schools include the following: Netup Net Filter,
CompGuardian and Child Web Guardian Pro.
All these softwares block unwanted websites, prevent inappropriate
downloads, protect students from online threats, and restrict the use of
Internet Explorer by time and day. Furthermore, students will not be able to
see explicit video such as pornography.
On the other hand, Internet filtering
software should not replace parents, teachers and administrations from watching
children on the Internet. In addition, Internet filtering software is not
perfect and it is room mistakes to happen. As technology advances in society,
there will be new challenges and problems with Internet. Therefore, creation of
new Internet filtering software will have to replace old ones to be successful
in blocking and restricting students from going on inappropriate websites.
Furthermore, Internet filtering software can block important websites such
health and other topics.
All in all, Internet filtering software is
good to use to prevent students for going on inappropriate websites. Students
do not need to see inappropriate behaviors, images and languages on websites.
In addition, students should not be allowed to watch bad things. Some students
who do not have Internet filtering software see all kinds of bad things on the
Internet. Sometimes students copy other
bad behaviors and do them. This will lead students on a destructive path in
life. I strongly recommend that Internet filtering software should be on all
school computers.
3. Your
library has been losing over $2,000 a year in library materials. Your
administration has charged you with investigating the possibility of acquiring
and installing a library security system. Analyze the different systems
available, analyze the requirements of your library, and prepare a detailed
analysis of your research. You may want consult different vendors’ Websites to
help gather information.
A
part of library media specialist job is keep library materials safe from theft
and vandalism. As a library media specialist it is job to find the best library
security system. The school administrator would have to allow me to do this
type of task. My job is to find the best security system that is cost
effective. I would inform the school administrator two security systems that
would be good to use for the library. The first security system is purchasing
an anti-theft detection and RFID Tags. The anti-theft detection need to be
place in front of the entrance of the library door. The RFID tags need to be
place on library materials such as books, CDs, DVDs and tapes. If someone tries
to walk out the library with materials with anti-theft detection would sound
off. There are all types of anti-theft detection devices. The school
administrator could purchase a cheap anti-theft detection device for the
library. In addition, RFID tags are cheap to purchase to place on library
materials. Another security system the administrator could purchase is security
cameras for the library. However, security cameras cost a lot and it would not
be cost effective. Furthermore, it is up the school administrator to decide
which security system is best to use to keep library materials safe.

4. The
interface a user uses help the user determine how they react to the system. Examine
two major library information systems to determine if the interfaces is user
friendly suggest ways that interface could be improved to make it more user
friendly.
I examined two universities library
information systems. The two universities library information systems I
examined were the University of Memphis and Oregon University. Both of the
universities did not have a user friendly interface. The University of Memphis
library information homepage have users to click on icons to obtain information
about the given topics. However, I suggest the university should have library
information displayed in detailed on the homepage. The homepage should have the library staff
and location of the university visible on the homepage for users to read. In addition,
the university library information homepage has an icon for users to click on
that reads ask a Librarian. I suggest the link or links to speak to the
Librarian should accessible on the homepage. Oregon University has only three
icons on the library information homepage. The three icons include the
following: How to Research, Find Information and Cite my Sources MLA or APA. I
suggest this university library information homepage have library staff contact
information displayed for users to access. In addition, I suggest instead on
clicking on icons to obtain this information. The information should be listed
under the icons for easy access and viewing.
