Chapter 3 questions 1 and 3
1. Compare the regulations and competencies for certification for certification in your state with you might like to apply for certification. Estimate the amount of time it will take to complete those requirements and determine where you could complete some them in your present program.
The requirements to become a certified library media specialist in the State of Alabama are similar at many of the Universities in Alabama. However, there are two differences in the requirements at two universities that I researched. One university requires library media specialist to complete 36 semester hours of course work. In addition, this same university requires a library media specialist to take and pass the Praxis II in order to do their internship. Before graduating a library media specialist must also take and pass the Graduate Comprehensive Exam in their major field. After successfully completing all course work, Praxis II and Graduate Comprehensive Exam, then a library media specialist can apply for certification in this field. After comparing another university’s library media specialist program requirements, this university requires the same amount of coursework hours. However, the only difference between the two universities for completing the library media specialist program is that one school does not set a time frame for taking the Praxis II and Graduate Comprehensive Exam. All in all, it takes about 2 to 2 ½ years in receiving this degree at both universities.
Most of the required courses I need to become a library media specialist is already offered at the university that I attend. Both universities have similar classes for students to take. Furthermore, if I were to decide to attend either of these two universities, then I could transfer many of my courses from my university to these two universities.
