Library Media Specialist Philosophy
My
library philosophy evolved from my teaching experience. I enjoy working with
students to teach them important information about become successful learners.
My belief regarding working in the library includes the following: encourage
students to read, promote a positive learning environment and provide
technological resources and reading materials for students and teachers. In
addition, as a library media specialist my job is to foster personal
connections with students from many diverse backgrounds to listen to them read
and assist with information needs. It is important for student to locate,
evaluate and use information to complete assignments, writing papers and
reports. Furthermore, the ultimate goal as a library media specialist is to
teach students library skills so they become independent in research and
locating books for doing assignments of any type.
First, students
need to be encouraged to read. Some students do not enjoy reading because they
think that it is boring. As a library media specialist I would share my
experience in reading different kind of books. In addition, I would inform the
students what I learned from reading books. This would provide students with a
sense of knowing that reading is fun and meaningful. As a library media
specialist I would allow students to check out books that are interesting to
them. I would not deter them from reading books of their choice because I do
want them to change their minds about reading. I would have reading workshops to
allow students to spend extended amount of time reading authentic texts and
give them opportunities to talk about the books they read. I would have
literature circles for students to work in small groups to talk about events
and characters in books, author’s craft or personal experiences related what
they read in the stories. Furthermore, providing students with reading
strategies would help them in becoming successful readers.
Second,
students need to be able to read in a quiet library. In addition, students need
to know to be quiet when checking books in and out from the library. As a
library media specialist communicating rules and procedures to students would
provide quiet and orderly functioning in the library. The library should not be
a place for students to talk and play. In addition, library media specialist
needs to know how to handle disruptive students in the library. A behavior log
should be placed in the library for students to sign when they are misbehaving
in the library. Library media specialist should talk to students with respect.
Students would respect a person who treat them right.
Thirdly,
teaching older students how to create and use wiki, blogs and Google would help
with them to become better communicators. As a library media specialist I would
teach them how to create and use these technological resources for sharing
ideas and assist others in writing papers and reports. In addition, as a
library media specialist teaching and showing students how to use e-readers
would assist them in reading captivating and animated stories. Students would
have fun reading books from a mobile device. I would show students how to
download stories from mobile devices. This would enable students to read
anywhere in the world. In addition, the library should have collection of books
that are interesting for students to read including educational magazines. As a
library media specialist I would have educational resources for teachers to use
in their classroom. The educational resources would be related to the school
curriculum. This would assist teachers with teaching different lessons in the
classroom.
Lastly,
library media specialist needs to teach students library skills so they would
know how to use the library effectively. Some of the library skills that should
be taught to student including the following: Online Card Catalog, Dewey
Decimal System and genres of books. Students knowing these skills would help
them to locate books in any library. Furthermore, students will enjoy looking
for books in the library once they know how to locate books them.
All in
all, library media specialist job is to help students to become productive
researchers in obtaining needed information for doing assignments including
writing papers. Library media specialists have to teach students to how to use
the library. Students would not know how to use a library if they are not
taught by library media specialists. In addition, library media specialist job
is to help teachers find resources in the library to assist with their
teaching. Teachers should be able to find resources related to the school curriculum.
Conceptual
Framework-Decision Maker Summary
As a reflective on the
LEM 511 class I have grown in learning about technology. Technology can be used
for communication, research and entertainment. However, mobile devices such as
smartphone, ipads and iphones are used mainly for social networking. E-readers
such as Amazon Kindles are used for downloading books to read. As a change
agent I could teach others about using technology. I can teach students and
teachers how to create blogs, wiki and Goggle to share information with other
people. I can teach students how to create stories using an avatar. I believe
students will be intrigued how they can design a character and record a story
for other people can hear. Furthermore, I can teach students and teachers how to
create podcasts to convey information by the way of video.
As an upcoming library media specialist, I
will become forever a lifelong learner. A lifelong learner is a person that
continues to gain knowledge to become a better educator. I will attend workshops that are gear toward
working effectively in the library. In addition, I will take classes to help me
with teaching students about library and reading skills. I want to become a great library media
specialist to convey resources that can assist students in reading and learning
effectively. As a library media specialist I would teach students how to locate
books in the library by knowing how to use the Dewey Decimal System. In addition, I would teach students how to
use the Internet for doing searches. I
would show students educational videos on laptops. I want to show them they can
watch videos on the Internet. However, I
want to make sure as a library media specialist that other resources are
available in library for students to read such as educational magazines.
Students would enjoy reading about animals, nature and political events. I want
students to be exposing to all types of information in the world. By doing a
field experience in this class, I learned from a library media specialist at a
school about how to assist students and teachers in the library. Furthermore, I want students to become better
readers and learners in life.
Mobilization
Summary
Mobilization means the way people
communicate using mobile devices. In addition, mobile devices are no more than
hand held computers. Some mobile devices including the following: ipads,
iphones, laptops and smartphones. These mobile devices have applications for
playing games, watching video and researching information. In addition, people
use mobile devices for social networking. People enjoy talking on the phone
versus meeting face to face to talk. Mobilizations can be used in many ways in
the educational community. As a library media specialist, I would use ipads in
the library for teaching purposes. I would teach students library skills such
as Card Catalog, Dewey Decimal System and genres of books. I would teach
students how to go online to access the Card Catalog for the purpose of finding
books in the library. In addition, I would teach students about how the Dewey
Decimal System. I would inform the students the books are categorized in order
according the Dewey Decimal System. I would inform the students who came up
with the Dewey Decimal System. I would let them know Melvil Dewey came up with
library classification system to make it easy for locating books and shelving
books in the library. As a library media specialist, I have to communicate with
parents, teachers, and administrators. I would use my computer to email
parents, teachers and administrators when I want share information and ask
questions about something I need to know. As a library media specialist, I
would have educational websites for parents to access at home to help their
children with reading and other subject areas they are learning in the
classroom. Furthermore, technology has drastic change in the world and
educators must make changes in the classroom and library in teaching with
technology.
Technology
Tools in the School Library-Web 2.0 Summary
Web 2.0 is unlike the web pages that
people use to create blogs and wiki. Web 2.0 is interactive technology for
students to use. Web 2.0 applications allow students to collaboration with one
another including teachers. Web 2.0 allows teachers and students to communicate
lively with one another. In addition, web 2.0 is mainly use for networking and
socialization. As educators know social software has emerged to Web 2.0. Some of the web 2.0 applications including
the following: flicker, goggle maps and delicious. People do not know have to
no longer purchase maps to find a particular location. Now people could use
google maps to find a particular location. Flicker is another application that
can be used for social networking from around the world. Delicious is another website application for
people to share information about anything to a community of people on the
World Wide Web. However, as library media specialist I could teach students how
to use Flicker to communicate with other students about discussing school
related topics. This would allow students to learn from their peers about
school related information. In addition, as a library media specialist I could
teach students how to locate areas in cities and states using google maps. This
would help students to become familiar with understanding a social studies
lesson a teacher is teaching them about maps. On the other hand, I would teach
students about how to use Wikipedia online Web 2.0 applications. I would teach
them they could research important people and inventions. However, I would
inform students people post information about important people and inventions
that see fit for others to read. I want students to know that they could create
their own information about important people and inventions and post it on Wikipedia.
E-books
Summary
Ebooks are no more than “electronic
books.” Books are electronic because
their files can be access on a computer. There any many types of ebooks. Some
ebooks include the following: Amazon Kindle, Kobo, Ebook wise, and Palm
Tungsten. People can read from the touch of a finger. People no longer have to read normal
paperback books. Ebooks have cover art, an author, editor, publisher and story
like normal paperback books. In addition, Ebooks can be access anywhere. People
can read at a park and library. As a library media specialist I could read
younger students stories from E-books. This would allow me to read and see
students better while reading to them. I could make sure the students are
listening attentively while I am reading. However, as a library media
specialist I could show older students how to use E-books to read stories
independently. Students could read interesting stories they enjoy reading at
the tip of their finger. As a library media specialist I would provide students
with educational stories that help them become better readers. In addition, as
library media specialist my job is to encourage students to read. Some students
have to be motivated to read because they think reading is boring. I believe
E-books are a great technology to be used in the library because students would
have an opportunity to read electronic books. However, e-books should not take
place of normal paperback books because some students enjoy reading this kind
of books. As a library media specialist, I want to make sure I have all types
of educational resources and technology for students to learn. I want to see
all students to become successful individuals in the world. Furthermore,
students need to know how to use technology because technology has become
advanced in the 21st century.
Budgets for School Library Summary
School librarians must have budget plan in
place for the library. However, library media specialists need to know the
school where they working at budget process, timetable of budget cycle, key
figures that approve and implement budget plan, and library needs are met.
Library media specialists need to take in account when creating a budget plan
how much the resources are going to cost. In addition, library media specialist
needs to create a list of things they want to be included in the library
besides of already having books. Some of things library media specialists might
consider in their budget plan to purchase for the library include the
following: promotional materials such as posters, promotional events, ICT
equipment, software and licensing. However, if the schools where library media
specialists are working already have ICT school budget plan that need to omit
this in their plans. There are some other things library media specialist might
consider in their budget plan how much they are willing to spend for library
furniture and equipment, electronic and AV equipment, CD-ROM players, scanning
equipment, video players, computer equipment that are adjusted for visually or
otherwise physically handicapped, material resources and electronic resources.
Library media specialists need to research how much this item cost before
placing it on their budget plans. Furthermore, library media specialists need
to have a library committee to work on the budget plans with them.
