Questions 1 and 2 page 151

1. You are considering constructing a digital library for your school. Your two options are to prepare it as an intranet or place it on the Internet. Prepare a paper evaluating the value of each option, along with a recommendation, for a presentation to your school administration.

As a library media specialist, I am weighing the options of constructing a digital library through Intranet system or the Internet. However, constructing a digital library from an Intranet means I have to connect with the school district to make it available. Students would have access the digital library only in school. They could not access the digital library at home. In addition, students who are receiving distance education would not have access to library resources while at home. These particular students must have access to library resources because they are attending school from online university. Students who are not receiving a distance education need to have access to library resources in doing research. It takes a length of time doing any type of research. Students want to write effective research papers and reports. Therefore, they should have available library resources at home to provide them with ample opportunities to do research. As a library media specialist, I have to consider how to meet the needs of students. In addition, I have to examine a better way for my students to be able to research information. Another consideration is making the digital library available on the Internet. This would give all students access to the library at home. Students can use the digital library all day at home if they desire. The most important to get the digital library started on the Internet I need to get the Web creation software that the school district requires librarians to use. Also, I have materials in the digital library that meet the information needs of students including other patrons. Another thing the digital library needs to have in it materials that relate to the school curriculum. As a library media specialist, I need to provide resources in the digital library for all groups of people. This includes different software such as assistive technology, distance education, and foreign language translation. The digital library needs to have graphic programs for students to use including communication tools such e-mail and Web 2.0 applications. In concluding, I prefer to have the digital library available on the Internet. Students can use the online library at any time. In addition, other patrons can use the library any time they desire. I recommend that making the digital library available on the Internet is the best option.

2. Using Peter Milbury’s school-libraries.net. Web page, select three digital libraries you consider to be exemplary. Using a standard Web page evaluation form, evaluate each of the sites and then prepare a report on each site for your class.

The digital library website from Hawaii is not good one to review for information. However, the homepage is colorful and attractive. This could get anyone attention to view this site. The user has to click on the icon that is in the middle of the homepage that reads students, teachers and families to access the information. The major information is on the second page. In addition, the major information is not organized. The major information is close together and not good for users to read. The major information on the second page is current and updated. The images on the second page is brightly colorful. The font size of the second page is kind of small. It would be hard for someone who is visually impaired to read. In addition, the font size is not consistent. There are many icons a user could click such as I want to find information and I just want to hang out. When a user click on I want to find information, the user will find online encyclopedia, bibliography help, and find a good book. There are many more resources under this icon I only named a few. When a user click on I just want to hang out, the user will find use the computer, read and study, explore music and board game lounge. The information I just want to hang out just provide how students supposed to behave in doing these kinds of activities. The name of the digital library I evaluated was Kaiwa Elementary School. The website address of this digital library is http://kailuaeslibrary.hidoe.us/.

The digital library of Lawrence High School is a good site to review for information. Before the users goes to the homepage they can read a welcoming statement from the library. Users can click to skip the introductory paper and go straight to the Homepage. The homepage is extremely attractive. The colors of the homepage are red and black. The font color of the homepage throughout is red. The homepages is where all the major information can be reviewed. The types of major information include the following: card catalog, book reviews and e-books. These are only some of the few I mentioned, but there are many more that can be seen on the homepage. There are many images of people and books. They are larger enough to be seen. In addition, the images have content either backside it or underneath it. Users can easily navigate up and down to the review the homepage. Lawrence digital library provide users with other websites to find information. However, Lawrence digital library has a statement in writing that says that the library is not responsible for the content and availability of the websites. Users can click on the websites icon to access the many sites that are on this page. Users can click on icon the homepage that digital library offers. This digital library is good place to find information when anyone is doing research. Furthermore, users able to do good research because of the wealth of information this digital library provides for them to access. This digital library website is

The digital library of Kennett Middle School is attractive. The homepage have images of students reading books in the library. The background of the homepage is white. This is good because the images of students reading books in the library are colorful. The homepage is very informative to users. The homepage include the name of library media specialist, address, phone number, e-mail address and opening hours of the library. The font size is appropriate for these particular website because of the size of the pictures are large. The icons are on the left side of the homepage. However, the font is black. The icons that are on the left side of the homepage include the following: KMS web page, Library club, and Web search tools. I only named a few icons, but there are some more on the homepage. When users click on the Web search tools, they see a number of search engines. The search engines that they can see on this page include the following: Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask and About. However, there are Meta search engines can use to do research that includes Dogpile and Info. Users can easily navigate on this digital library site. Everything on the homepage and other pages are organized for users can read easily. The digital library website address is http://kmslmc.weebly.com

Summary

E-books have LCD screens or external monitors. In addition, E-books have e-text that adjusts in size ranging from small to large. E-books are made plastic and it is weightless. E-books load books, but turn pages slowly. People can carry many e-books because low weight. In addition, people need to have some computer experience because there are types of e-books.
